Chodosh Season – Yoshon

There is a mitzvah according to most authorities to keep Yoshon in the land of Israel. The mitzvah of Yoshon means waiting to use the new crop of grain until the second day of Pesach. Some people follow this mitzvah even outside of Eretz Yisroel.

The Chodosh season refers to the time when companies will begin using the new crop of next year’s grains. A person who wishes to have designated Yoshon grain should put aside grain before the new season starts.

Chodosh oats may be on the market at the beginning of August, with spring wheat and barley following closely behind. Those who want to purchase Yoshon items to store over the Chodosh season should do so now. Please note that all grain and flour products that will be stored should be refrigerated to avoid insect infestation. (COR)
